All about Liss, and letters, and how much Liss loves letters.

Hi there lovely lettery friend!

I’m so glad you’re here.

The short version :

I’m an Australian single mum to six amazing, creative, passionate, slightly wild, small people, who is obsessed with all things creative, and right now that means calligraphy and lettering – letterigraphy if you will. Here at liss.com.au you’ll find a bunch of resources to help you get inspired to start lettering, teach you all the things you need to know, and find the encouragement you need to share your art with the world.

The longer version (I talk a lot):

I have been obsessed with letters, and making them beautiful, for a very long time, collecting fonts instead of shoes, and making typographic posters for fun in my spare time. In 2007 I started doing graphic design work from home (baby number 3 had just been born), teaching myself Corel Draw (yes, I just admitted to using that, don’t hate me), and then the Adobe Creative Suite. I built websites, did event branding and collateral, and loved the creative world I found myself in.

In 2014, after baby number six was born, I started hand-lettering, first with a brush and ink, then investing in an extensive collection of brush pens. Over time I found my groove, which inks I loved, and which I would only use under duress, which pens travelled everywhere with me, and which only got pulled out occasionally.

I bought an iPad Pro + Apple Pencil in early 2016 and downloaded Procreate straight away. I loved it, then hated it, and struggled to really get into it for a long time. But I persisted, and now, I LOVE IT. Not to the exclusion of my trusty brushes and pens, but as an amazing addition to my lettery toolkit.

Most days now you can find me lettering, usually with at least one small-ish person hanging off me(my kids are 4-14, at least one of them is already taller than me!) – except when my kids are with their dad, then the odds are high that I’m napping or drinking coffee.

Some of my thoughts on lettering and creativity

I’m all about letterigraphy. (Weird right… I’m all about weird too.) What I mean is that I’m not into fierce debates over the difference between lettering and calligraphy (and if you’re reading this and wondering why I’m even saying it, be glad you’ve managed to avoid that whole debacle!). What I am into though, is equipping people and empowering them to create beautiful letters and share them with the world (enough so that I’m willing to make up nonsense words to try and kill a debate that I think is pointless). Letterigraphy people. All the beautiful letters, shared with all the world.

I don’t believe in perfection. I think that beauty is found in imperfection. That it’s those weird little things we do with some of our letters that let our personality shine through, the beauty of our humanity, the proof that it was created by a living person with a heart and soul, rather than a machine. So can I encourage you to stop chasing perfection, to let your weird out just a little, and to keep going and learning and practicing and being inspired until your crazy, beautiful, blend of all the things appears – your unique style. It takes time, it takes a lot of time, but it is so totally worth it.

Enough about me, I have a bunch of resources to help you get started with lettering, letterigaphy if you will. Here are my faves:
